The genesis of Indian Society for Plant Physiology started in August 1957 during the annual session of the Indian Science Congress that provided an opportunity to the Indian Scientists for a get-together under the chairmanship of Professor K.V. Thimann of Harvard University, U.K. An urgent need was felt to organize the Plant Physiologists. A meeting therefore, was convened under the chairmanship of Shri Boshi Sen to explore the possibility of forming Indian Society for Plant Physiology. An adhoc committee was constituted consisting Drs. J.J. Chinoy, K.K. Nanda and R.D. Asana.

In January 1958, the Indian Science Congress was held at University of Allahabad, U.P., Prof. K. Mothes of the University of Halle, Germany, chaired a session where about one hundred Plant Physiologists attended the meeting. A decision was taken unanimously to form Indian Society for Plant Physiology and also to publish a journal in the name of Indian Journal of Plant Physiology. The Indian Society for Plant Physiology was registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860: S/1355 in the year 1958. Government of India sanctioned a grant of Rs. 1500/- to publish Indian Journal of Plant Physiology in the year 1958.

To fulfill the aspirations of scientists and research workers, the Indian Society for Plant Physiology with constant and sincere efforts has come up as per expectations. At present the society has 645 life members, 140 annual members and more than 200 subscribers from India and abroad. The journal is being published quarterly and covers research articles from India and abroad. It is being indexed by four international indexing agencies.
